DSM-5 gets an update

DSM-5 gets an update

In March 2022 the American Psychiatric Association (APA) published the revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR).

The DSM-5-TR includes:

  • revised text for almost all disorders
  • significant updates to some sections including Prevalence, Risk and Prognostic Factors, Culture-Related Diagnostic Issues, Sex- and Gender-Related Diagnostic Issues, Association with Suicidal Thoughts or Behavior, and Comorbidity
  • more attention to sociocultural influences on mental health and risk factors like racism, discrimination and the use of non-stigmatising language
  • update to the language surrounding gender dysphoria – as well as the chapter itself
  • modifications to criteria for more than 70 disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, bipolar I and II disorders, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in children and substance-induced mental disorders
  • the addition of a new diagnosis called ‘prolonged grief disorder’, which is defined as “intense yearning or longing for the deceased” and “preoccupation with thoughts or memories.
