The unfolding situation in Afghanistan

The unfolding situation in Afghanistan

This week we have seen the escalating crisis in Afghanistan across our news channels.

We are deeply concerned, and the APS has urged the Federal Government to extend our humanitarian program in line with the commitments of our international allies.

Our psychology community joins the veteran community in highlighting the impact of this news on Australia’s service men and women, and veterans. The news and images of the unfolding events may be distressing, and for some, re-traumatising.

Australia has an international obligation to protect those most at risk including women and girls, human rights defenders, ethnic minorities, and Afghans who served alongside and assisted Australian military forces. We encourage Australian Afghans and refugees to seek the help and support they need.

We have shared our position with the media and through this encourage anyone experiencing distress, or being impacted by current events in Afghanistan, to reach out for mental health support.

The APS will continue to highlight and raise awareness of the psychological impacts of this crisis.
