The APS Disaster Response Network in action

Members of the Disaster Response Network (DRN) have been assisting Australians through a number of natural disasters in recent months.

The DRN is a national network of psychologists who have a special interest and expertise in working with individuals and communities affected by disasters and emergencies.

All members of the DRN must complete the APS Practice Certificate in Disaster Support. This training is currently free for eligible APS members due to Federal Government funding and is made up of four online modules.

Our members have:

  • provided support to the Australian Red Cross as part of their COVID-19 response
  • been engaged by the Red Cross to support frontline workers in response to the Wooroloo bushfires in Western Australia
  • been activated by NSW Fire and Rescue in response to the floods across New South Wales
  • provided support to Red Cross volunteers in Western Australia following Tropical Cyclone Seroja.

Close to 450 members have already completed the training across the country in the last 12 months. This has built our network to over 500 members.
