APS College
Overview
It would be easy to spend an afternoon reading through social media influencer views of the importance of understanding your attachment style and come away with the view that attachment is akin to a personality variable. The theory and science of attachment in adulthood paints a much more complex, nuanced view. Unfortunately, this often makes it harder for psychologists to engage with more deeply and thus miss the benefit that this richer view can offer their practice with people seeking help.
This webinar will introduce the idea of Attachment States of Mind as organisations of self-other-affect experiences that constitute information processing modules within the mental process of people: in attachment shorthand, Internal Working Models of relationship. Understanding these patterns and their variability, as well as the ongoing, dynamic role they play in organising attachment relevant information for people gives therapists a powerful aid in decoding what is happening in client communication during session and increasing the ability to respond sensitively and effectively. The two primary insecure patterns of avoidance and ambivalence will be discussed and practical considerations emphasised.
There will be opportunity to ask questions during this webinar.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:
- Expose participants to contemporary attachment theory and research on States of Minds to increase knowledge of the range and complexity of these ideas.
- Demonstrate the application of these ideas for effective influence of change processes within client sessions.
- Provide suggestions for reflection and practice of these ideas within attendees own practice.
Presenter(s)
Mr. Joe Coyne
About the presenter(s)
Joe Coyne has worked for 30 years as an applied developmental psychologist in the area of child and family psychology and adult psychotherapy since graduating from a Master of Clinical Psychology. He has been specifically interested in developmental processes that lead to healthy outcomes, particularly the impacts of parenting and early life events on personal trajectories. This lead him through training in Behavioural Family Systems approaches to Object-Relations supervision and training to understand the interplay of family dynamics across generations.
Since the early 2000’s he has been exploring the benefits of incorporating attachment theory and research into contemporary treatment approaches for parents, children, and adults. This work led him to becoming an accredited therapist and supervisor for the Circle of Security Intensive intervention (2010 and 2011). In Australia he is an Endorsed Clinical Psychologist and Endorsed Educational and Developmental Psychologist.
Joe has had a longstanding interest in training providers in attachment and social neuroscience, starting back in 2000 when he began teaching attachment and neuroscience to foster parents and child protection staff, and then to child health staff. More recently he has developed a deep appreciation of Romania and since 2016 has been traveling there to support attachment informed practice through the COS framework. Since 2023 he has branched out and been training the COSP program to audiences in Australia and has enjoyed deeply the experience of connecting a broad range of practitioners to the COS model. He currently works as a consultant and trainer for Circle of Security International and in private practice.
