Webinar (Live) Event

Introduction to Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)

Organiser Banner

Overview

The APS hosts this webinar with the APS College of Clinical Psychologists.

This webinar provides a practical overview of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) for psychologists and other mental health professionals working across the lifespan.

The aim of the session is to increase awareness and foundational understanding of ARFID as a heterogeneous presentation of feeding-related differences, and to support clinicians to recognise and respond to ARFID in ways that are evidence-informed, ethical, and engagement-focused.
The webinar will explore how ARFID presents in children, adolescents, and adults, how it differs from other eating and feeding disorders, and the role of factors such as anxiety, sensory experiences, trauma, and eating history in shaping patterns of eating. Key considerations in assessment, early identification, referral pathways, and multidisciplinary collaboration will be outlined, alongside the core principles of effective psychological support delivered within a neurodiversity-affirming, person-centred, formulation-driven framework.

The webinar aims to provide participants with a clearer understanding on how to approach ARFID in ways that reduce unintended harm and support safety and access to appropriate care.
