Overview
There is growing research on the effectiveness of Schema Therapy for chronic depression and some early work on other treatment resistant mood disorder presentations.
This workshop will cover Schema Therapy formulation and treatment approaches for working with these presentations, including case studies, demonstrations and opportunities to practice skills.
Specific topics include:
- Schema Therapy models for Chronic mood disorders like Depression and Anxiety
- Schema Therapy for other Chronic Axis I Disorders like OCD & Eating Disorders
- Dealing with challenging client in session behaviours, such as chronic hopelessness
- Experiential techniques to address early adversity and schema development
- Assisting clients to build networks of support through behavioural pattern breaking
- Schema self-therapy to avoid compassion fatigue
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:
- Understand the application of schema therapy with various client presentations
- Apply a variety of approaches to deal with challenging in session behaviours
- Use therapeutic techniques to support clients to break behavioural patterns
- Build self-awareness and manage compassion fatigue

Mrs. Ruth Holt
About the presenter(s)
Ruth Holt is a Clinical Psychologist and Principal of Canberra Clinical and Forensic Psychology. She is a Certified Schema Therapist and Supervisor/Trainer in both Couples and Individuals.
Ruth works with individuals and couples with a range of presentations and conducts training in Schema Therapy, couples therapy, women's mental health and abuse in relationships. She has presented at the Australian Psychological Society's Clinical College Conferences, the International Society of Schema Therapy summits and runs workshops throughout Australia and Asia. She has
worked with The University of Canberra Psychology Clinic supervising and presenting for postgraduate students.
Ruth has edited the book Schema Therapy for Children and Adolescents and has published on
Schemas and Intimate Partner Violence. She consults with organisations on responses to abuse and also conducts strengths building workshops for couples.
Notes
Registration includes lunch on both days and light refreshments during breaks. The Branch Committee will supply basic tea, coffee and snacks for morning and afternoon breaks. Lunch on both days will be catered.
Resources: You will be emailed a pdf of materials for the workshop that we request you print out before attending. There will also be required pre-reading to ensure you get the most out of your workshop experience.
There is free parking available on site at Pambula Beach Surf Life Saving Club.
Target Audience
This event is aimed at those wanting to learn more about schema therapy (including students and early career psychologists) through to those experienced practitioners who want to extend their skills in using schema therapy with clients. We invite people with a range of experience to attend, including our student members, but certification requires attendees have finished either their Masters program or 3 years of experience following a 4+2 pathway.

It is up to attendees to assess and determine how learning from this event aligns with the requirements of their learning plan. The providers accordingly do not make any representation that the event counts towards attendees’ CPD learning requirements. If an attendee determines themselves that the learning they complete aligns to their learning plan, then they can decide to count those hours towards their CPD requirements for the registration cycle.
