Overview
Studies have confirmed that ADHD and ASD co-exist in up to 50% to 70% of clinical presentations. The identification of Neurodiversity related overlap or comorbidity is lacking in the training of both Psychiatrists and Psychologists. It is also under recognised in the community, by government and by its funding overseers such as NDIS. Such a dual diagnosis impact on adverse clinical outcomes leads to higher mental health service needs, immense family or carer burden and significant economic costs. Yet clinical expertise and skills are lacking with such complex assessments. It is only since 2015 DSM V "endorsed" incorporating ADHD diagnosis alongside the diverse array of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Alongside similar timelines, the diagnostic framework of ADHD has also amalgamated with the Neurodiversity paradigm. The presentation is a simplified attempt to capture the basic evidence base of 'why' (reasons), 'what' (underlying science) and 'how' (approach) to enhance clinical awareness for Psychiatrist and Psychologists.
