Navigating the coronial process: Tips and tricks

Overview

This webinar will focus on the process when the Coroner is investigating a death where you may have been involved in the care of that person and provided psychological services and or treatment.

It aims to assist practitioners in their understanding of the jurisdiction of the Coroner's Court (in South Australia), their powers, what to do if requested to provide information, records and/or statements by South Australian Police (SAPOL) or the Coroner's Court. It will also provide tips and tricks from a legal perspective when engaging with these investigations, and within discussions, cover legislation and national processes.

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic.

Duration of access

This webinar will be recorded. Access to the recording and presenter slides is for 12 months from the date of confirmed registration.

Madeleine Eaton, Tom Dayman

About the presenter(s)

Madeleine Eaton is an insurance lawyer with a background in personal injury litigation, professional indemnity, medical negligence, historical sexual abuse and sensitive claims. She frequently appears and has instructed counsel in matters in the Magistrates' Court, District Court and Supreme Court. Madeleine has a background in health and regularly advises health and medical practitioners in relation to civil and investigatory matters. Madeleine also routinely provides advice to insured psychologists through a psychololgist advice line.

Tom Dayman, Special Counsel, Gilchrist Connell, has experience across a broad range of professional indemnity, personal injury, public liability and workers compensation matters. He has a particular interest in the defence of medical malpractice claims, and holds a senior position in the health law and medical malpractice team. Tom regularly appears in various Courts and Tribunals on behalf of his clients, including as Counsel in the Coroner's juristiction. His experience includes a number of years at the Crown Solicitor's Office, acting on behalf of the South Australian Government Financing Authority (SAFA) and major Government Departments such as SA Health, SA Police and Correctional Services.
