Webinar (Live) Event

Wisdom, creativity and therapy when working with older adults

Organiser Banner

Overview

The APS hosts this activity with the Psychology and Ageing Interest Group (PAIG).

Clinicians tend to be trained in the act of doing the profession. Indeed, a student’s expectation of training is to discover what to do with clients. However, clients do not necessarily present in neat and tidy packages where the more typical ‘if this, then that’ approach would tend to work.

Case in point, older adult patients in particular are increasingly heterogenous (e.g., Ferrucci & Kuchel, 2021; Nguyen et al., 2021), and it is in these scenarios that wisdom & creativity have their benefits as we work to apply our knowledge, our doing skills, while also catering to the needs of the individual (and thereby being of most benefit to their care and wellbeing). The one size fits all approach may have its benefits, instil a sense of security even, but it is not necessarily the best way to meet the needs of the individual.

This webinar will consider the constructs of wisdom and creativity within the context of the day-to-day work of a clinician and ask the attendee to consider the art of being, not just the act of doing.
