Introduction to psychoneuroimmunology for psychologists

Organiser Banner

Overview

Research has revolutionized our understanding of the role of the immune system in neural and psychological function. The relevance of the effects of psychosocial stress and early life adversity on neuroimmune activity is well documented, and the need for psychologists to understand mind–body interventions that can enhance neuroimmune resilience is ever so prevalent.

This activity will:

  • explore the effects of immune activation on key psychological domains, cognition and arousal (fatigue & sleep), and disorders such as depression, posttraumatic stress disorder and anxiety,

  • cellular and molecular interactions between thoughts,

  • emotions and health based on recent research that identifies links between psychological states and physical wellbeing,

  • how distress impacts physiological processes, and

  • how neurological, endocrine and immune systems influence health and chronic conditions.

Level of Learning

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic.
