Overview

The APS hosts this activity with the APS Psychology and Ageing Interest Group (PAIG).

This on-demand activtity outlines the international research evidence around running psychotherapeutic groups for older people and the relevance of this research for the Australian residential aged care home context.

It will address the clinical and logistical issues that therapists need to consider when running therapy groups for older people living in residential aged care homes.

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this on-demand activity, participants should be able to:

  • identify existing evidence for group psychological therapy in residential aged care,

  • recognise the pros and cons of conducting group therapy in residential aged care, and

  • recognise the logistical and therapeutic issues that need to be considered to ensure safe and effective delivery of group therapy programs in residential aged care.

Annaliese Blair MAPS

About the presenter(s)

Annaliese Blair is a Clinical Psychologist and researcher with the Southern NSW Local Health District Aged Care Evaluation Unit and the Australian National University. She has worked in this field for 21 years, overseeing research projects aimed at alleviating problems associated with ageing, including the impact of dementia, as well as problems experienced by carers. Annaliese has extensive experience working in inpatient units, residential care settings, and community mental health teams, providing psychosocial interventions for older people with mental health problems and/or dementia, their carers, and nursing staff. Annaliese has lived experience of caring for family members with dementia and mental illness and is mostly interested in taking practical steps to improve life for people and help them to reduce unnecessary suffering. To this end, she has worked as a Senior Policy Officer with the NSW Older People’s Mental Health Policy Unit and is currently undertaking a PhD at the Australian National University.
