The APS hosts this activity with the APS Psychology and Ageing Interest Group (PAIG).
Whilst there is no current cure for dementia, evidence indicates that common lifestyle factors can increase risk for developing dementia. These risks have been identified as potential treatment targets that occur predominantly from midlife (from age 45) through older adulthood (>65 years) that can be targeted, in preventative efforts, to reduce the onset of dementia. This activity will provide an overview of the risk factors that have been identified, in addition to the evidence related to how these risk factors can be treated.
Psychologists have specific expertise that can be used to treat the individual risk factors using behavioural therapies. In addition, psychologists have expertise in screening for dementia risk, as well as building and maintaining motivation to make the behaviour changes needed for long term dementia risk reduction.
Given the duration of the workshop, familiarity with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is preferred, but not required.
