On-demand Event

Managing conflict between parents when working with children

Organiser Banner

Overview

This on-demand activity aims to assist in managing conflict in the room when a patient or client is the child and the professional’s job is made much harder due to the conflict between the parents.

It will:

  • offer some specialist skills to help practitioners working with children, when they feel they are being asked to mediate between the parents of the child they are being asked to assess, support and treat,

  • equip the practitioner to still be helpful in the space where they are working with children and there is conflict in the room, and

  • demonstrate how to adapt the skills practitioners already know when dealing with a child client, to a context where two parents are in the room where there is potentially conflict.

Level of Learning

Intermediate. This activity is targeted to those who have some previous learning on the topic.

Duration of access

Access to the recording and presenter slides is for 12 months from the date of confirmed registration.

  • apply a well-oiled structure to balance the competing needs in the room, and

  • learn the skills to set appropriate boundaries for the sake of everyone’s safety.

Presenter(s)

About the presenter(s)

The speakers are three family law mediators with collective backgrounds in law and medicine. They are nationally accredited mediators and registered as family dispute resolution practitioners with the Attorney-General’s Department. They have been working in the conflict zone with parents for many years in both community and private sectors. They also teach mediation and specifically family dispute resolution to other professionals who wish to enter the profession. They have worked with a variety of organisations, including Relationships Australia, Legal Aid NSW, Community Justice Centres, The College of Law, The Fair Work Commission, UNSW, Macquarie University and University of Western Sydney. They seek to support other professionals working in dispute resolution, and especially to assist and upskill professionals who become inadvertent or incidental mediators in their work with children and parents.
