Key strategies and practical tips for long-term weight-loss success

Organiser Banner

Overview

The management of overweight and obesity is a complex science and more education is needed to better empower our patients. There are six key strategies we should be incorporating into our patient management to help them succeed on their long-term weight-loss journey.

How often have you heard someone say: ‘It’s easy – you need to eat less and move more!’?. This advice dates back as far as Hippocrates in the fourth century BC, and not much has changed since. Diets are based on this very foundation, and despite their different approaches, they are all essentially the same. They set a caloric restriction and develop a set of arbitrary rules to create a fear of certain foods, to ensure you consume less.

Despite the hype associated with diets, fewer than 5% succeed on their weight loss journey long-term and many people end up in a worse off position, not only psychically (from the weight regain) but also psychologically, from the negative relationship they develop with food and the distorted perception of a healthy body image they develop through dieting.
