Cultural competency:
2. Assessing youth, culturally and linguistically

Overview

Series: Cultural competency

This is the second webinar in the series and will focus on psychological assessment with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) youth.

40% of the CALD population consists of minors who are from migrant or refugee background, and encounter language and cultural barriers. Despite their varying ethnicities or migration experiences they all attend schools.

Some of the CALD youth manifest psychosocial and academic difficulties, however, currently, there is an absence of valid and reliable tests and protocols that can be used by psychologists.

This webinar will cover:

  • the use of case studies to present the difficulties CALD youth can experience and the risk factors contributing to their problems,

  • ways in which informal assessment tools, such as interviews with the clients and their families can be used to gather salient information about the psychosocial and academic difficulties,

  • the measures that are available in a range of languages, and

  • examine ways in which the existing formal tests can be used as qualitative tools.
