Principles and practice of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Organiser Banner

Overview

The original version of this activity, CBT Fundamentals: Processes and Techniques in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, was developed jointly by the Australian Psychological Society (APS), the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), and Occupational Therapy Australia (OTA) with funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) as part of the Better Access to Mental Health Care through the Medicare Benefits Schedule initiative. In addition to providing training for psychologists in the applications of CBT, the activity delivers training for practitioners registered to provide Focused Psychological Strategies (FPS) Medicare items who are required to demonstrate compliance with the mandatory CPD hours required for maintaining billing rights to provide those Medicare services.

The eLearning activity has been subsequently revised by the APS to ensure the training is based on current research and developments in the field of CBT and consists of eight (8) topics:

  1. Introduction to CBT

  2. Assessing symptoms

  3. CBT case conceptualisation

  4. Structure of CBT

  5. Behaviourally focused intervention

  6. Thought records

  7. Behavioural experiments, and

  8. Core beliefs.

Content is arranged in self-paced modules and each module includes a printable learning guide, online video demonstrations, interactive activities, readings and other relevant resources to facilitate active CPD.
