Overview

Psychologists are obliged to ensure that patients/clients are fully informed of the risks of treatment, and a general explanation of the intentions/expectations of treatment.

This activity comprises of a discussion of the legal, ethical and professional risks and obligations of patient/client “informed consent” to treatment, whether by face-to-face or via telehealth. 

Case studies will be presented.

Level of Learning

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic.

Duration of access

Access to this activity is for 12 months from the date of confirmed registration.

About the presenter(s)

Michael Gorton AM is a senior partner at Russell Kennedy Lawyers and has more than 25 years’ experience advising the health and medical sector on all aspects of commercial law, assisting boards of health organisations to understand their legal obligations for effective governance structures, governance policies and implementing risk management strategies. He is the Chair of Alfred Health. He is a Board member of Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and Ambulance Victoria, and is the former Chair of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). He is a former Chair of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission. He was recently announced the 2021 Melbourne Lawyer of the Year for Health and Aged Care by “Best Lawyers”. Rebecca Mathews is the Chief Publications and Advisory Officer at the APS, and oversees the work of the Professional Advisory Service and the development of guidelines and resources in areas of psychology practice. She is a clinical psychologist with a PhD in the area of child psychology.  Rebecca has experience working in private practice, in the disability sector, and community mental health.
