Membership resignation information

Considering resigning your APS membership?

Membership resignation options

If you are retiring from psychology practice, or considering ending your APS membership for another reason, here’s an overview of your options and how we can support you.

The role APS membership plays

APS membership provides a stable platform for advocacy to government, professional standards, workforce planning, and support for psychologists across career stages.

Many members choose to remain connected - even when they reduce or cease practice - because APS represents the profession at a collective level, beyond individual roles or workplaces.

You can learn more in our 2025 Annual Report video.

Before you decide

Some members reach this point due to retirement, parental leave, changes to work, health, or financial circumstances.

If any of these apply to you, you can review the options below by selecting “Change how you stay connected” from the drop‑down menu.

Resigning your membership now

Membership resignation and membership fees

Whether you pay annually or by monthly direct debit, the full membership fee is payable for the membership year ending 31 May, meaning that payments are not refundable or cancellable. For details, see our Membership Terms and Conditions.

We understand that personal circumstances can change. If you are experiencing serious illness, bereavement or financial hardship, please contact us (our contact info is below).

Change how you stay connected

Financial hardship

If financial circumstances are influencing your decision, please reach out. A confidential conversation with our team may help identify available supports.

Parental leave

Current APS members are eligible for complimentary membership for their first year of parental leave.

If you are taking parental leave soon, let us know, we can help you maintain your connection during this time.

Retirement or transition to retirement

You do not need to hold general registration to maintain your APS membership.

Members who are fully retired or transitioning to retirement are eligible for a 50% discount on the full membership fee.

Many retired members choose to stay connected for community, and opportunities to contirubte via guidance to other members, and consultation work with our policy team.

Other support options

We understand circumstances can change, and we’re here to help you continue as an APS member. If you’d like to talk through your options, please reach out - our team is ready to support you.

You can learn more about our discounted fees here.
