College of Clinical Psychologists Student Prize

The APS College of Clinical Psychologists Student Prize acknowledges postgraduate clinical psychology students in Master, Doctor of Psychology programs, and combined Masters/PhD programs who demonstrate high levels of clinical skill, combined with the ability to design and conduct clinically relevant research. The Prize is offered at each Tertiary Institution offering an APAC-accredited Postgraduate Clinical Psychology program.

Administration

  1. The Prize is the responsibility of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists.
  2. The Prize may be offered at each Australian Tertiary Institution  with an APAC-accredited postgraduate psychology program. Following the close of the call for nominations, the Chair of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists, as well as the Student Representatives on the National Executive of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists will be notified of the candidates.
  3. The Prize may be presented by the relevant State Chair of the National Executive of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists at a public forum.

Eligibility

Nominees must be students who have completed their final year of clinical training of an Australian Tertiary Institution with an APAC accredited postgraduate clinical psychology program.

Selection criteria

In judging nominees for the Prize, the Chair of the Award Selection Committee will have regard to the following criteria:

  1. the application of a scientist-practitioner model in research, coursework and placements;
  2. the development of a research project in the area of clinical psychology with a research question reflecting current areas of interest and need in clinical psychology
  3. the achievement of high level of clinical skills as judged by academic staff involved in teaching clinical interventions and also by peers. This may include consistently high marks on supervisor reports from placements; and
  4. the provision of support to fellow peers and the promotion of team work as judged by peers and academic staff.

Nomination process

  1. A call for nominations for the APS College of Psychologists Student Prize should:
    1. Be communicated by using APS digital communication channel;
    2. Be provided to the Head of School or Department of each Australian tertiary institution with an APAC accredited postgraduate clinical psychology program via email in November for that year’s nominations.  Deadline for submissions will close on the 28 February the following year.
  2. Candidates must be nominated by the Head of Department of an Australian tertiary institution.
  3. Only one candidate can be nominated by the Head of Department from each Australian tertiary institution.  All nominations from a Head of Department should be prepared by the nominee’s supervisor in association with the Head of School and the nominee.
  4. Nominations should be addressed to the Chair of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists and received by the APS National Office prior to the closing date.
  5. The Student Committee member will review the nominations and make recommendations to the National Executive of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists who will where appropriate, endorse nominations by mid-March, with winners notified thereafter in a direct email letter from the College Chair to the Nominees, CCd to their supervisor.
  6. A formal announcement of winners will be made via APS communication channels each year.  Winners will also be invited to be presented with their awards at a locally organised APS College of Clinical Psychologists event.

Value of the award

Successful candidates for the APS College of Clinical Psychologists Student Prize will:

  1. receive relevant membership of the APS and the College for the next membership subscription period;
  2. have their name and University communicated via APS digital communication channels;
  3. receive a certificate of acknowledgment of their achievement, presented at a locally organised APS College of Clinical Psychologists event;
  4. be invited to submit an abstract of their research thesis, for publication via APS digital communication channels;
  5. be invited to submit an abstract for consideration by the Conference Scientific Program Committee as a poster at the College of Clinical Psychologists Conference (or a similar APS event).

Closing date

A call for nominations for the award will be formally issued to the Heads of Department of each Australian Tertiary Institute with an APAC-Accredited postgraduate clinical psychology program in November each year.
