The Alastair Heron Prize honours the contribution made by Emeritus Professor Alastair Heron to the Society and the College of Clinical Psychologists.
The Award encourages and rewards clinical psychologists for work in the area of adult ageing. As the population ages, there is a growing need to understand the processes and sequelae of human ageing and to develop appropriate therapies for psychological problems among older people.
Administration
- The Alastair Heron Prize Fund is invested and managed by a financial organisation determined by the Board.
- The Award is the responsibility of the College of Clinical Psychologists.
- The selection committee will be chaired by a Director or nominee, and will include the Chair of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists, two members of the National Executive Committee of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists and one program convener of an APAC accredited and approved University Clinical Psychology program, nominated by the chairperson of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists.
- Prizes may be presented at the annual general meeting of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists every second year.
- If, in any one prize application year, the selection committee considers that no suitable candidate has been nominated for the prize, the unexpended net annual income may be added to the Alastair Heron Prize Fund and to augment the amount available to be awarded in subsequent years.
Eligibility
Nominees must be members of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists.
Nomination process
- The Society, through the APS College of Clinical Psychologists, will call for nominations from the membership of the Society, every second year.
- Each nomination must be proposed and seconded by clinical psychologists.
- The proposer and seconder must each submit a brief report supporting the nomination and giving details of the nominee's suitability.

- the current field of scientific knowledge and research in human ageing; or
- psychological therapy among older people.
- When reviewing research, the selection committee will look for applied research of exceptional quality in the area of normal adult ageing or age-related dementias, with preference to be given to research on non-Alzheimer and non-Parkinson disorders.
- When reviewing therapy, the selection committee will look for excellence in the psychological treatment of problems among older people.
