Overview
As integrative mental health approaches become increasingly visible in health and mental health care, practitioners must uphold the standards outlined in the Psychology Board of Australia’s Code of Conduct. This presentation examines the ethical challenges psychologists face when considering complementary and integrative mental health approaches in their practice — within the scope of psychological practice. Key areas of focus include maintaining professional boundaries, ensuring informed consent, avoiding role confusion, and evidence informed practice. The session will offer practical strategies for ethical decision-making and risk mitigation. The presentation aims to support psychologists, educators, and supervisors in exploring these complex intersections while maintaining client safety, professional integrity, and regulatory compliance.

Dr. Carrie Thomson-Casey
About the presenter(s)
Drawing on nearly three decades of experience in mental health care, Dr. Carrie Thomson-Casey is a clinical psychologist and an academic dedicated to the intersection of psychology and integrative mental health. Her work bridges conventional psychological practice with evidence-based lifestyle interventions, and her research has been published in leading Q1 journals. As an approved supervisor and academic lead, Carrie is passionate about empowering her colleagues and students and has supervised research projects exploring integrative mental health, integrative medicine, and lifestyle medicine. Carrie also holds qualifications in naturopathy and nutrition. Her goal is to provide practitioners with the clinical confidence to integrate modalities like nutritional psychiatry and mind-body interventions ethically and effectively, supporting the professional development of psychologists and allied health professionals.
