Treating childhood anxiety with mindfulness: An introduction to Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Children (MBCT-C)

Overview

The Child, Adolescent and Family Interest Group (CAFIG), in partnership with the School of Psychology, University of Adelaide, are pleased to invite you to a special 2-hour hybrid workshop on supporting child anxiety with mindfulness based cognitive therapy.

This will be an interactive, in-person and online workshop with the opportunity to practice skills. Professor Randye Semple will give an introduction to Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for children and provide information on the evidence base supporting its application for treating anxiety in children. Participants will then be introduced to a range approaches from MBCT-C and have the opportunity to practice these skills. Application to the therapeutic context with children will be discussed throughout.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the evidence base for mindfulness based cognitive therapy for children
  • Develop knowledge about how to translate evidence based approaches in mindfulness to the therapeutic context
  • Practice skills for supporting mindfulness in children

Professor Randye J. Semple

About the presenter(s)

Randye J. Semple, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. She directs the USC Child and Adolescent Collaborative for Trauma-Informed Care, part of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, and co-leads the USC Center for Mindfulness Science. An internationally recognised expert on mindfulness-based interventions, Professor Semple developed Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Children (MBCT-C) and its school-based adaptation, The Mindfulness Matters Program. She has authored nearly 60 publications and two books for clinicians and educators. With a clinical background in psychology and over three decades of meditation practice, Professor Semple’s work bridges research, clinical practice, and education to promote wellbeing in children and adolescents. Professor Randye Semple is supported by an International Fellows Award at the University of Adelaide.

This event is aimed at all clinicians who work with or will be intending to work with children in a therapeutic space.
