This workshop is for therapists who work with children and families. This includes psychologists, social workers, counsellors, occupational therapists, and speech therapists. The workshop has been well received by both less and more experienced therapists.

Presenter(s)

Dr Fiona Zandt and Dr Suzanne Barrett, Clinical Psychologists

About the presenter(s)

The workshop presenters, Dr Suzanne Barrett and Dr Fiona Zandt, are Clinical Psychologists with over 40 years combined experience in working with children and families with a broad range of psychological problems. They have each worked in a range of settings with children, including the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) outpatient teams, and in private practice. They both continue to enjoy working clinically with children and families, as well as facilitating training workshops and providing supervision to other psychologists. They are authors of the acclaimed Creative Ways book series for therapists.

Like most experienced therapists, Fiona and Suzanne’s style is eclectic, drawing on a number of theoretical approaches. A developmental perspective sits as their over-riding framework which guides them in modifying therapy for the children they work with. Their approach is strongly influenced by their training and many years of using cognitive-behavioural therapies with children, including ACT and DBT. A systemic family focus also guides their understanding of children and families and permeates their therapy and they draw on interventions from narrative therapy too. Their emphasis is on using play to engage children and to introduce therapeutic concepts and strategies.
