Overview

This webinar will equip practitioners with up-to-date knowledge and practical strategies that will assist in responding to school refusal.

It will commence with a contemporary conceptualisation of school refusal and will acknowledge the range of terms currently used for this presentation. School refusal will be contrasted with other school attendance problems and risk factors will be summarised. Assessment tools will be presented, together with a discussion of assessment processes and challenges. An evidence-based cognitive behavioural therapy adapted for school refusal will be outlined with reference to child, parent/carer, and school strategies to support attendance and re-engagement with attendance.

Level of Learning

Intermediate. This activity is targeted to those who have some previous learning on the topic.

About the presenter(s)

Glenn Melvin is a clinical and counselling psychologist and Associate Professor at the School of Psychology, Deakin University.
He is co-lead of Mental Health Care at the Centre for Early Emotional and Social Development, Deakin University and an Honorary Associate Professor at the Centre for Educational Development Appraisal and Research at the University of Warwick (UK). For the last 15 years Glenn has been researching school attendance problems and how best to support young people, their families and schools towards successful outcomes. Together with his colleagues, he has evaluated a CBT-based treatment for school refusal and has recently developed school refusal parenting guidelines. He is a founder of the International Network for School Attendance and is currently serving as its President. Glenn works in private practice with adolescents who are experiencing attendance problems and their parents/carers and school.
