Neurobiology of eating disorders

Organiser Banner

Overview

This webinar will provide an outline of how eating disorders develop and will touch on the evidence on the neurobiological factors that may cause eating disorders, the brain function of individuals with eating disorders in comparison to those without, and the extent to which eating-disorder-related changes in the brain are reversable.

The webinar will also cover:

  • how current evidence-based treatments likely modulate the altered brain pathways that have been identified in individuals with eating disorders,

  • why a significant portion of clients don't respond to these interventions,

  • initial findings on novel treatment for eating disorders that are informed by neurobiological evidence (e.g., Temperament-based Treatment and Cognitive Remediation Therapy),

  • initial trials using psilocybin to treat Anorexia Nervosa, and

  • several myths surrounding the potential use of psychedelics in treating eating disorders.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this webinar, participants should be able to:

  • understand the neurobiological mechanisms underlying eating disorders,

  • identify the tools to explain how eating disorders and the brain interact to client/families, and

  • outline the background on brain-based interventions being developed for eating disorders.

Presenter(s)

Trevor Steward

About the presenter(s)

Trevor Steward is a NHRMC/MRFF Fellow at the University of Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences.
His research focuses on using ultra high-field 7-Telsa MRI technology to understand how subcortical regions of the brain contribute to common symptoms found across psychiatric disorders. Although the majority of his research to date has examined the neuropsychopathology of eating disorders, he also conducted studies on gambling disorder, PTSD, and obesity. His aim is to leverage neuroimaging tools to inform brain-based treatments and to predict individual clinical outcomes. He is the co-author of over 80 publications, including in journals such as Molecular Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine.
