Psychologists often work with co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions; however, often lack confidence in terms of terminology, interventions and knowledge of alcohol and other drugs (AOD) services. The aim of this activity is to increase awareness and confidence of working with individual with dual diagnosis.

The webinar will cover:

  • navigating state funded AOD treatment pathways,

  • how to deliver effective psychoeducation of drugs of choice and their effects, including comprehensive resources to do this, and

  • review of effective evidence-based practices that are commonly utilised when working with AOD clients.

Level of Learning

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic.

Duration of access

Access to the recording and presenter slides (once available) is for 12 months. Please note that access cannot be extended, and participants should plan to complete the activity within this period.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • identify AOD sector pathways and how can psychologists work collaboratively with state funded services,

  • deliver appropriate psychoeducation and interventions to clients who experience AOD issues, and

  • recognise evidence-based approaches that are utilised with AOD clients.

About the presenter(s)

Silvia Violante Cumpa is a Counselling Psychologist with significant experience in substance use issues. She has worked in correctional services, private practice and community health settings facilitating groups and providing individual and family counselling. Silvia is also an approved supervisor and provides supervision to other clinicians, with a key interest in developing confidence and skills of new graduates. She is currently leading a state funded drug and alcohol counselling service in the southern catchment area. She is a passionate leader that strives to enhance practice of integrative care.
