Psychology and climate change The Thinking Futures report marks an important step in our commitment to embedding more knowledge and resilience into everyday Australians to help them prepare for a future in which our climate looks and feels very different.
Our research revealed that 94% of APS members are concerned about the increasing toll climate change is taking on Australians’ mental health. This sentiment is shared by the broader community, with research from the Climate Council finding that 80% of Australians have experienced some form of extreme weather disaster since 2019. Three quarters of Australians want to see increased investment in psychological services for natural disaster-affected communities. Thinking Futures explores these issues and proposes a way forward for Australia.
What is the Thinking Futures report? This new report from APS provides important insight into some of the most pressing issues facing psychologists and the broader community. In our inaugural report, we also explore the intersection between mental health and climate change. By drawing on public and academic data, national quantitative surveys with 1,027 APS members and 2,068 community members along with community focus groups from across Australia, we have created a benchmark from which we can measure year-on-year data to guide the work of policymakers, government and the community.
