Psychology Week 2016 – helping Australians to thrive

In 2016 the APS introduces the Compass for Life campaign showing how psychology knowledge can be applied in everyday life to increase wellbeing and happiness. The campaign will promote ‘Ways to Thrive’ as well as offer a survey to measure how Australians are currently faring in key domains that influence health, wellbeing, happiness and life satisfaction.

Psychology research in the positive psychology field has uncovered the foundations for psychological wellbeing and happiness. This includes five important pillars (positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishment) as well as the identification of activities people can do to build on their strengths, increase their wellbeing and life satisfaction. It is this knowledge that we will share with the community during Psychology Week.

It is about celebrating psychology, demonstrating how psychology is improving people’s lives and creating opportunities for APS psychologists to get out into the community and share their expertise with pride. We hope all members can participate in the campaign in big ways and small.

Host an event

One of the best ways to take psychology to the community is by organising an event. Every year hundreds of APS psychologists, individually or within their Member Groups, take Psychology Week to the streets through a broad range of events. Nearly 600 events were hosted in 2015, ranging from festivals to seminars and fun runs.

You can register your event at www.psychologyweek.com
and opt to receive a free promotion pack. A range of free downloadable resources – posters, tip sheets, brochures and logos – will also be available.

Measure wellbeing and happiness

In 2016, the APS will conduct a survey to measure the wellbeing, life satisfaction and happiness of Australian adults and adolescents. The results will be shared across social media and media during psychology week, with the full report and media releases posted on the www.psychologyweek.com website.

Find ‘Ways to Thrive’

During Psychology Week, Australians will be invited to take the survey themselves to measure their levels of wellbeing and happiness as well as receive tips and advice to help them thrive. We want to equip Australians with skills and knowledge distilled from psychology to help improve overall wellness and life satisfaction.

On our dedicated campaign site www.compassforlife.org.au (going live in Psychology Week) Australians will be able to take the survey and receive their results in real time along with correlating tips and advice.

We will use social media to promote the results from our survey, share key tips (#waystothrive) as well as drive people to the real-time survey. We want people to actively engage with an activity that helps build their mental health literacy and skills.

You can support the campaign by following the APS channels, sharing our posts,
and also sharing your own #waystothrive via
@AustPsych and www.facebook.com/AustralianPsychologicalSociety

With the strength of 22,000 members spread across the nation,
we have the ability to make this campaign powerful and far-reaching.

It’s your Psychology Week.
