Strength amidst trauma work: Investigating resilience and sustainability in therapeutic practice

Closes 30 July 2026

Bravehearts and Bond University (Cher McGillivray) are currently seeking participants for a research study exploring resilience and sustainability in trauma counselling practice.

Trauma counselling is deeply meaningful, but also demanding work that can carry significant emotional and cognitive load. While much of the existing research focuses on burnout and secondary trauma, this study aims to better understand what helps therapists not just cope, but thrive.

This research will explore:
• How therapists experience reward and meaning in their work
• The organisational supports and individual strategies that enhance sustainability
• How different practice contexts shape these experiences

The findings will contribute to strengthening evidence-based approaches to workforce wellbeing, training, and professional support.

If you are therapist and work or have worked in the trauma space, and would be interested in contributing your insights, we would love to hear from you.
