A psycho-social exploration of atypical depression

Closes 31 July 2025

Atypical Depression (AD) is a clinically recognised subtype of Major Depressive Disorder, marked by symptoms such as mood reactivity, hypersomnia, hyperphagia, leaden paralysis, and heightened sensitivity to interpersonal rejection. Despite its name, AD is not rare. However, inconsistencies in its measurement have hindered accurate diagnosis and research progress.

This study aims to improve how AD is identified and measured. Specifically, we will evaluate current scales used to assess AD and develop a refined measure that aligns more closely with DSM criteria and captures the distinct symptom profile of the condition. To ensure content validity, we seek input from approximately 20 subject matter experts in psychology. These experts will complete a brief online survey assessing the relevance and clarity of proposed survey items for the new scale. Findings will contribute to the development of a reliable and valid measure for AD and will be shared through academic publications, the Open Science Framework, and in conjunction with previous ethics-approved research. The study will ultimately enhance the assessment of AD and improve future clinical and research practices.
