Integrating IFS Therapy and EMDR: A Practical Hands-on Workshop

Overview

Many clinicians often struggle with how to identify which clients would most benefit from integrating an Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy approach into EMDR therapy for comprehensive trauma treatment. In this training, Dr. Fatter will help clinicians identify clinical signs that warrant use of a multi-modal treatment, including for complex trauma treatment. IFS Therapy and EMDR principles will be discussed including the role of memory reconsolidation in both models. Dr. Fatter will present specific IFS-based interventions for each phase of the eight phases of EMDR therapy. Participants will learn how to utilize IFS Therapy interventions in the context of an integrative treatment plan to support stabilization, enhance resource development, strengthen working alliance, client motivation, support desensitization, and fortify therapeutic gains. Treatment planning with clients experiencing ongoing trauma exposure will be addressed.

Participants will learn how to apply an IFS case conceptualization and how to make different parts maps to provide clients a sequenced and scaffolded approach in Phase 1. The self-tapping technique, STARR®, and IFS befriending techniques will be taught to support internal communication between clients parts and their Self during Phase 2. Dr. Fatter will offer practical strategies to work with polarized parts and address blocking beliefs to support consent-based EMDR reprocessing. IFS techniques will be taught to identify targets, including how to discern international trauma, historic trauma, and collective trauma targets. IFS-based interweaves during Phase 4-Phase 6 will also be presented as a tool to help tax working memory and foster internal repair. Using parts work interventions to end a complete or incomplete session during Phase 7 and ways to reevaluate during Phase 8 will be discussed.

Multiple options to integrate EMDR resources into the IFS Therapy steps will be taught and discussed. This integrative approach supports co-regulation, communication between the client’s Self and a target part, strengthens a client’s access to self compassion, and fosters stabilization. This workshop will be didactic, interactive, and experiential. Experiential practice time will give participants an opportunity to practice interventions and learn hands-on skills.

Schedule:

  • Friday 16 October: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (including a total of 2 hours of breaks)
  • Saturday 17 October: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (including a total of 2 hours of breaks)

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:

  • Identify three signs that warrant consideration of using a multi-modal treatment plan for complex trauma treatment.
  • Define working memory theory and its importance in effective EMDR treatment.
  • Describe the process of memory reconsolidation.
  • Apply an IFS lens to an integrative EMDR case example.
  • Describe the three types of parts in a traumatized client.
  • Develop an integrative EMDR treatment plan that includes addressing blocking beliefs.
  • Demonstrate at least two methods to help externalize parts of a client’s system to support perspective-taking.
  • Utilize a collaborative approach of parts in the clients’ system to conduct effective resource development installation.
  • Distinguish between trauma rooted in intergenerational or historical trauma and present day trauma.
  • Demonstrate how to ask protector parts for consent to do EMDR reprocessing on an identified trauma target.
  • Describe at least two IFS Therapy interventions to help move through blocked processing during EMDR reprocessing.
  • Identify at least two places in the IFS Steps to transition to EMDR reprocessing.
