‘S"self-care" as it appears in the new Psychology Board of AHPRA guidelines

Presented by the PWPP of the Melbourne Branch of the APS

Since 1st December 2025, registered psychologists in Australia have been required to follow two new sets of guidelines published by the Psychology Board of AHPRA: ‘Professional Competencies for Psychologists’ and the ‘Code of Conduct’. Both have content related to self-care. the purpose of this session is to include some presented material on the above but for most of the session to be a discussion between members of the PPWP team and between members of this team and the other attendees on issues that arise for them as a consequence of the new guidelines.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:

  • Fully understand the overall need for physical and emotional self care
  • Be aware appropriate boundaries

Adjunct Professor Paul Martin

About the presenter(s)

Paul R. Martin is an Adjunct Professor at Monash University and at Griffith University. He held Academic leadership positions at a number of universities in Australia. He is a clinical and health psychologist who has practised in Australia, the UK and the USA; in urban and rural areas. He has held a number of professional leadership positions including National President of the Australian Behaviour Modification Association, Director of Science and then President of the Australian Psychological Society, and President of the 27th International Congress of Applied Psychology. His main research interest has been headache and migraine, with subsidiary interests in depression (particularly postnatal depression), anxiety, stress, and social connections/support. He has authored/edited eight books and 170 journal articles and chapters. He has received two Australian Honours, a Centenary Medal “For service to Australian society and medicine”, and a Medal of the Order of Australia “For service to medicine in the field of psychology”.

Registration includes the presentation and a two course dinner.

Target Audience

This event is aimed at psychologists in private practice.

  • A post-event email will be sent within two weeks of the event’s completion to each registrant’s registered email address. This email will include the CPD certificate, and any additional resources shared during the session.
