Next-generation leadership: Transforming the culture of power to empowerment

Overview

The Psychologists for Peace Interest Group is pleased to invite you to a presentation by Professor Zeynep Aycan, an outstanding scholar on leadership.

Leadership failures are often attributed to poor leaders, yet many stem from a deeper problem: the persistence of cultures that concentrate power, discourage voice, and create dependency rather than shared responsibility. This talk argues that addressing today’s complex social and organizational challenges requires a fundamental shift from a culture of power to a culture of empowerment.

Drawing on research in leadership, organizational behaviour, and cross-cultural psychology, Zeynep will present a next generation view of leadership as the collective and ethical process of creating the conditions under which people can learn, contribute, and adapt together. The talk introduces the GROWTH framework, which outlines how organizations can cultivate meaningful goals, psychological safety, shared leadership, and empowerment-oriented practices that enable people to thrive.

This perspective has important implications for peace supporting leadership. Sustainable peace depends not only on resolving conflict but also on creating environments where people feel heard, respected, and able to participate constructively in decisions that affect them. By reducing fear, fostering trust, and distributing leadership more broadly, empowerment cultures can strengthen dialogue, inclusion, and cooperation across differences.

The session invites participants to explore how psychologists can contribute to building organizations and communities that support both human flourishing and sustainable peace.
