Webinar (Live) Event

ECT: Why is this done and what do we really know about its' neuropsychological effects?

Overview

CCN NSW is pleased to extend a warm invitation to members for a special webinar event on Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), offering a unique opportunity to engage with leading knowledge and clinical insights.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains the oldest and most effective treatment for severe or difficult-to-treat neuropsychiatric disorders, although is often underutilised due to issues including access, concerns regarding cognitive effects and stigma. During training and in clinical practice, neuropsychologists generally are not educated or regularly exposed to clients who receive ECT, which could play a role in perpetuating misunderstandings regarding treatment and its neuropsychological effects, and practitioners perhaps to even question, e.g., why is this still being done?

This webinar will aim to cover the basics of modern ECT practice, including describing what it involves and how it is administered, who it is administered to, treatment mechanisms and acute and longitudinal neuropsychological effects. The webinar will further explore how different treatment and patient factors in turn affect neuropsychological outcomes, which have relevance for interpretation of subjectively reported and objectively measured cognitive changes potentially attributed to treatment. Last, the webinar will cover recent advancements in treatment monitoring using brief cognitive screening instruments across ECT treatment and their role in optimising patient outcomes, illustrating ever increasing role of neuropsychology in ensuring patients gain maximal clinical benefits from treatment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Improved understanding of modern best practice ECT
  • Overview of short and longer term neuropsychological effects
  • Overview of what treatment and patient factors affect neuropsychological outcomes
  • Improved understanding of the role of cognitive monitoring in improving patient outcomes
