Overview
This immersive five-day training program is designed to empower psychologists with the knowledge, insight, and tools needed to recognise, prevent, and recover from professional burnout. Through a blend of theory, experiential learning, and self-reflection, participants will explore evidence-based frameworks, practical strategies, and holistic self-care practices to support sustainable wellbeing in their professional and personal lives.
Participants will:

Deepen their understanding of burnout, its predictors, and its impact on mental health professionals.

Explore the COR and JDR models, Maslach’s theory, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI).

Reflect on risk factors unique to the psychology profession, including vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue.

Learn and practise a suite of holistic self-care strategies—from mindfulness and movement to nutrition, ergonomics, and spiritual wellbeing.

Engage in real-world case studies, interactive group work, and personal action planning to create tailored burnout prevention and recovery strategies.

The Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) have updated the Professional competencies for psychology which come into effect on 1 December 2025. This activity addresses the following PsyBA Professional competencies for psychology: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- recognise the multifaceted nature of burnout, including its psychological, physiological, and enviornmental components,
- distinguish between burnout and other stress-related conditions such as vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue,
- critically evaluate and apply evidence-based burnout prevention and management strategies, including self-care practices, workplace ergonomics, and holistic approaches, to design and implement effective burnout recovery plans tailored to individual and organizational needs,
- effectively create and implement comprehensive burnout management plans by integrating theoretical insights with practical self-care techniques, addressing potential barriers to burnout recovery, and
- promote resilience and well-being within professional settings.

Dr Yuliya Richard
About the presenter(s)
Dr Yuliya Richard is a clinical psychologist and director of Blue Horizon Counselling, where she works with individuals and clients in her private practice.
With a PsyD in Health and Clinical Psychology from the University of Newcastle, she specializes in helping clients navigate emotional, adjustment, and relationship challenges effectively. Dr Richard has also developed the online training program Impulsivity.com.au to support individuals struggling with impulsive behaviours, including addiction, to fulfil her aim to spread care across Australia.
Originally from Ukraine, Dr Richard’s diverse background includes qualifications in philology, cross-cultural communication, and sociology, alongside extensive work with charities and NGOs. Her experiences have shaped her compassionate approach to therapy, particularly in supporting victims of abuse, migrants, and parents facing challenges.
Dr Richard is deeply passionate about fostering longevity and fulfillment in professional life while helping others rediscover joy and balance in their personal lives. She believes in empowering individuals to create sustainable well-being and purpose. She is an ardent supporter of the multi-faceted lens: Holistic Health- which means that her passion to give support covers social, personal, cultural, spiritual, physical, occupational, emotional and psychological well-being.
