Watching the clock: Time management for psychologists

Overview

Time management is a common challenge for therapists, particularly for those in the early stage of their career. This on-demand activity focusses on the:

  • challenges associated with time management,

  • professional and therapeutic benefits of time management, and

  • practical strategies for time management, related to both therapy sessions and administrative tasks.

The three main topics covered are:

1. Time management in sessions
  • the importance of keeping to time in session,
  • practical tips of developing session structure,
  • maintaining appropriate boundaries,
  • agenda setting,
  • managing '49s' and 'door handle confessions' (clients who raise topics at the last minute of a session), and
  • consideration of transference and counter-transference.
2. Notes and correspondence
  • tips for completing in a timely manner, and
  • the amount and type of information required to meet professional obligations.
3. Workload
  • setting and maintaining a manageable workload,
  • optimal caseload, and
  • managing waitlists.

Level of Learning

Foundational/Intermediate.

This activity is targeted to those new to the topic and those with some existing knowledge.

Duration of access

Access to the recording and presenter slides is for 12 months from the date of confirmed registration.

About the presenter(s)

Dr Bianca Denny is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Ivanhoe, Melbourne.
She works from a interpersonal and psychodynamic perspective, with adults experiencing concerns related to low mood, anxiety, trauma, attachment disorders, and adjustment/life transition experiences. Bianca is a board-approved supervisor and provides group and individual supervision, including general supervision, supervising provisional psychologists, and those seeking clinical endorsement.
Her research and academic interests include areas such as health and clinical psychology, training of health professionals, and the importance of supervisory relationships.
