Information covered in LIVINGWORKS safeTALK relates to the topic of suicide and may be sensitive for some participants.
LIVINGWORKS safeTALK is a 4-hour in-person training on becoming suicide alert. Using four basic ‘TALK’ steps – Tell, Ask, Listen, and Keepsafe, participants gain confidence approach a person that could be thinking about suicide.
The focus is to connect with a person with thoughts of suicide and to keep the person safe while connecting them to a resource capable of ensuring safety over time such as a family member, an ASIST trained person or a mental health professional.
In LIVINGWORKS safeTALK participants will learn how to reach out to someone thinking about suicide and help them keep safe by promptly connecting them to further support.
The role as a connector is the main focus of this training where participants will be encouraged and empowered to talk openly with someone about suicide through a 4-step model.
Overcoming personal and community attitudes to seeking and providing help is a key theme of this training.
The learning process includes:
-
trainer presentations and facilitated discussion,
-
skills practice,
-
videos that illustrate what happens when signs of suicide are overlooked, and how you can contribute to safe outcomes when these signs are heard and addressed,
-
opportunities to further explore organizational applications of the training, and
-
direct and honest discussion about suicide is encouraged - while sometimes challenging, this prepares helpers to openly approach people with thoughts of suicide and connect them with further help.
