ThinkUKnow - preventing online child sexual exploitation

Organiser Banner

Overview

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) leads the ThinkUKnow program, a nationally delivered primary prevention program educating parents, carers, teachers, and students about online child sexual exploitation.

In 2021, the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) received over 33,000 reports of online child sexual exploitation. Research from the ACCCE indicates that only 52% of parents talk to their children about online safety.

This webinar will cover:

  • the role of AFP and ACCCE's role in protecting children,

  • market research conducted by the ACCCE,

  • sexual extortion and an increasing trend of sexual extortion for cash and the education response,

  • a case study from an AFP investigation involving an offender targeting male children and teenagers over a variety of social media platforms. The case study explores how sexual extortion occurs and most importantly, how parents and carers can take action to support their children and,

  • ThinkUKnow education resources available to the public.
