Using DSM-5-TR (2022) in clinical practice

Organiser Banner

Overview

The APS hosts this webinar with the APS College of Clinical Psychologists.

The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR), was released in March 2022. Despite the intention of DSM-5 to produce regular updates based on evolving scientific research (resulting in a DSM-5.1, 5.2, etc,), this is the first published revision to DSM-5 since 2013.

Whist DSM-5-TR (2022) employs the original DSM-5 diagnostic criteria (with a few modifications for clarity), the clinical contribution of the revision is found in the comprehensively updated descriptive text accompanying each of the DSM disorders. This is particularly seen in the updated: Prevalence, Risk and Prognostic Factors; Culture-Related Diagnostic Issues; Sex and Gender-Related Diagnostic Issues; Association With Suicidal Thoughts or Behaviour; and Comorbidity.

The webinar will cover:

  • the structural changes in DSM-5-TR which now utilises ICD-10 coding for all disorders and conditions of clinical focus,

  • the addition of a new diagnosis: Prolonged Grief Disorder,

  • the addition of symptom codes enabling reporting for Suicidal Behaviour (SB) and Non-suicidal Self-Injury behaviours (NSSI),

  • the inclusion of the impact of racism and discrimination on the diagnosis and manifestations of mental disorders and the use of non-stigmatising language,

  • an overview of “Gender Dysphoria” as example of the impact of each of the above changes, as well as a case example of DSM-5’s conceptual differences to ICD-11 (which came into effect in January 2022), and

  • a critical reflection on the utility and limitations of DSM-5 in clinical practice.
