Be quiet and man up: Fathers and birth trauma

Organiser Banner

Overview

CPD on the goTM eLearning activities provide an opportunity to learn about diverse topics in short, flexible sessions that you can peruse at your own pace, wherever you are.

Birth trauma can lead to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) unless identified and treated early. Research has focused on the mother’s experience, highlighting the need to assess risk and protective factors. However, what of fathers who witness the birth? Despite experiencing high levels of fear, particularly where a partner or child’s life is perceived to be at risk, fathers’ post-birth trauma is rarely considered, let alone treated. Yet attendance at birth by fathers is increasingly common and is one of the most life-changing events a man can experience.

It examines the unique experience of fathers, the impact of witnessing birth complications unfold and the societal and structural barriers to recovery. Given the serious mental health outcomes, and the critical role many fathers play in caring for their partner and child post-birth, a greater understanding of prevention and treatment is urgently required.

This activity contains a current evidence-based article followed by 10 questions to consolidate learning. Together, a pass mark of 80% and completion of a reflection represents active* continuing professional development (CPD).

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this CPD on the goTM eLearning activity (reading the article and passing the quiz), participants should be able to:

  • list factors that may lead to birth trauma in fathers,

  • understand the impact of fathers’ PTSD on their relationships with others,

  • recognise  barriers to help-seeking behaviour, and

  • identify key prevention and treatment recommendations for clinical practice.

Notes

*’Active CPD’ refers to activities that utilise written or oral processes to reinforce learning and test knowledge. While active CPD is not a requirement of the Psychology Board of Australia, it is recommended because learning is more likely to be retained and to lead to improvements in practice. Provision of a reflection on all types of CPD is, however, a requirement of the Board.
