Schema Therapy for BPD/Complex Trauma

Overview

Two-day workshop focussing on Schema Therapy for developmental trauma, incorporating Interpersonal Neurobiology, The Polyvagal theory, Somatic Psychotherapy, bottom up and top down approaches and the phases of intervention. Training Objectives Include:

  • A focus on experiential and Emotion Regulation techniques in Schema Therapy to use in session with reference to the three phases of treatment, i.e., Bonding & Regulation, Schema Mode Change & Autonomy.
  • Understanding the three phases of treatment (bonding and regulation, mode change and building autonomy)
  • Looking at the typical mode conceptualisation for this treatment population - Using experiential and emotion regulation techniques
  • Cognitive, Experiential, Behavioural Pattern Breaking for this clinical population will be discussed in detail, including the importance of Safety & Stabilisation before the use of Schema Mode Change Techniques.
  • Understanding Flight, Fight and Freeze responses, bypassing coping modes by building therapeutic presence
  • Limited reparenting when working with child modes using connection,co-regulation and self-regulation

Incorporating ideas from Polyvagal theory, (Porges, 2016), Interpersonal Neurobiology (Segal, 2000), Somatic Psychotherapy (Fisher & Ogden, 2015) and Stages of Treatment (Ford & Cortois, 2000) when applying Schema Therapy Techniques. This is the second workshop in the certification series for accreditation in Schema Therapy.

*A working knowledge of Schema Therapy and the Mode Model is recommended.

Venue: Pambula Beach, NSW

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:

Ms. Ruth Holt and Dr. Rita Younan

About the presenter(s)

Ruth Holt is a Clinical Psychologist and Principal of University Avenue Psychology. She is a Certified Schema Therapist and Supervisor/Trainer for both Individuals and Couples.

She works with individuals and couples with a range of presentations and conducts workshops and training in Schema therapy, clergy resilience, women’s mental health and abuse in relationships. Ruth has presented for the International Society of Schema Therapy, at the Australian Psychological Society’s Clinical College Conference, Moore Theological College and The University of Canberra.

Ruth is also a AHPRA board approved supervisor, supervising Clinical Psychology Registrars and postgraduate psychology placements with the University of Canberra, the Australian National University, the University of New England and Charles Sturt University.

Dr. Rita Younan is a clinical psychologist and the founder and managing clinical director at STIA. She works in both individual and group schema therapy. Rita is an AHPRA endorsed supervisor. Rita not only draws from Schema Therapy, but EMDR, CBT, DBT and Somatic approaches. Rita is an Advanced ST supervisor/Trainer (ISST),  an EMDR Consultant (EMDRAA) & a psychedelic therapist (MMA).  Rita is also the Vice President (Events & Symposia) for the Jeff Young Schema Therapy Association; she works mainly with complex PTSD, personality pathology and attachment trauma.

Target Audience

This activity is aimed at experienced psychologists who have also completed Workshop One Schema Therapy. Early career psychologists and students considered if they have completed Workshop One Schema Therapy.

  • A post-event email will be sent within two weeks of the event’s completion to each registrant’s registered email address. This email will include the CPD certificate, and any additional resources shared during the session.

This event will not be recorded.
