APS Panel on assessment, support and therapeutic approaches for transgender and gender diverse people

Stigma, prejudice, discrimination and abuse are a common experience for many transgender and gender diverse people. Research consistently shows that transgender and gender diverse people experience poorer mental health outcomes and are at higher risk of suicidal behaviours compared to the general population.

We have a responsibility to support the mental health and wellbeing of transgender and gender diverse people and ensure our psychologist members have the tools and information they need to support these client groups.

The APS Panel on assessment, support and therapeutic approaches for transgender and gender diverse people has been established to help guide psychologists in their practice with this client group. The panel examines issues of concern to the trans and gender diverse community and advises on APS position papers and practice for psychologists.

The Panel has met regularly since July 2022 and is working towards developing a position statement regarding psychologists working with transgender and gender diverse people. The Panel is working to ensure the APS’ position reflects a diversity of professional views and experience, that is based on the available research and evidence. At this stage, the APS is on track to release the position statement in late 2024.
