College of Forensic Psychologists Maconochie Prize

The Maconochie Prize is named for Alexander Maconochie, the governor of Norfolk Island Penal Colony in the 1840’s. Alexander Maconochie was renowned for his progressive and enlightened approach to corrections and is considered the father of parole.

The Maconochie Prize encourages and rewards outstanding forensic psychology research by students for an outstanding publication in a refereed journal based on a student’s thesis.

Administration

  1. The Award is the responsibility of the APS College of Forensic Psychologists.
  2. The National Executive of the APS College of Forensic Psychologists will nominate a selection committee of expert academic judges who must be members of the APS College of Forensic Psychologists to be responsible for recommending an appropriate recipient to the Board.
  3. The selection committee must not include: 
    1. the Secretary or Chair of the National Executive 
    2. any person involved in the publication (as a supervisor) of the nominated work.
  4. The Chair of the National Executive will address any concerns or discrepancies in the judging process.
  5. Winners will be notified by email and be announced via APS digital communication channels

Eligibility

  1. Nominees need not be members of the Society.
  2. The nominee must be a student of an Australian university who has published as first author, an article on a topic of forensic psychology based on their Honours, Masters, or Doctoral thesis which has been submitted for a recognised qualification in psychology.
  3. The article must be published either during their degree or within a five year period of the confirmation of their degree.
  4. Students may only enter one publication per thesis; however, students who have completed multiple theses may submit one entry per completed thesis.

Nomination process

  1. Calls for nomination for the Maconochie Prize will be made via the APS digital communication channel.
  2. Nominations should be addressed to the Secretary of the National Executive of the APS College of Forensic Psychologists.
  3. Nominations must include a copy of the published article together with the full details of publication.
  4. All nominations must include full contact details for the supervisor(s).

Value of the award

  1. Successful candidates for the Maconochie Prize will receive an award of $500 and a certificate.
  2. The runner-up for the Maconochie Prize will also receive a certificate.
