Dr Karen Marangio
Early Career Teaching Award

Award type: Science

Karen Marangio is an early career researcher in the School of Curriculum, Teaching and Inclusive Education at Monash University. Karen’s core interests focus on psychology teacher education and curriculum-making (policy, broker, school and classroom), with the goal of developing teachers’ pedagogical knowledge for fostering students’ psychological literacy towards a more hopeful, just and sustainable futures.

Karen coordinates the psychology initial teacher education courses.  She is focussed on developing innovative and research-inspired practice (evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence) in her own teaching, with her students (pre-service teachers) and the teachers (in-service teachers) she mentors. She positions learners as active participants, and encourages collaborative and individual reflective practice as a way to articulate the thinking behind teaching practice and in turn, highlight the complex layers of knowledge and experiences that shape and inform a teacher’s practice. To support her scholarly approach to teaching and learning of psychology, she works closely with students, teachers and academics to co-design curriculum, co-teach and research her own teaching practice in order to enhance her students learning to teach psychology. Evidence of Karen’s scholarship of teaching and learning psychology can be found in her research publications, grants and projects.

Karen’s work aims to raise the profile of psychology teachers and teaching of psychology in schools. She is determined to create conditions for her students so that they can remain connected with the discipline of psychology education and enhance their career pathways when they are employed in school and other education settings. Karen is an elected member of Australian Psychological Society (APS) Division of Psychology, Research, Education and Training (DPRET) committee, secretary of APS Psychology Education Interest Group and AusPLAT, and founder of the Australian Teachers of Psychology (AusTOP) Network.
