Dr Samantha Newell

Dr Samantha Newell is a Psychology Lecturer at the University of Adelaide. Her qualifications across the educational lifespan provide a comprehensive understanding of student learning (PhD in Psychology, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Psychology (Hons), Graduate Certificate in Higher Education).

As an Academic Developer, Dr Newell led the design and delivery of a mandatory professional development program for over 400 teaching staff. She utilises research (including her own) to develop transformative learning experiences. As a researcher, Dr. Newell leads teams using a 'cognitive apprenticeship' approach. She verbalises decision-making, and practices "intellectual candour" to guide students through research.

Samantha’s scholarly contributions exemplify her dedication to advancing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), with 18 publications since 2019. She publishes SoTL research on Psychological Literacy, co-creation in intensive online programs, generativeAI in Higher Education, and building rapport/community/engagement in asynchronous and online learning environments. In 2014, Dr Newell was awarded South Australia’s Outstanding Science Educator award (SASTA). In 2020, she was awarded the Excellence in Tutoring award for psychology at the University of Adelaide. In 2023, Samantha won the best research paper prize at the ASCILITE conference. Recently, Dr Newell has been accepted into the University of Adelaide’s ‘Adelaide Education Academy’ (AEA).
