Dr Nina Papalia is a Clinical Forensic Psychologist, Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (ARC DECRA) Fellow, and Stream Lead in Childhood Maltreatment and Youth Offending Research at the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science at Swinburne University of Technology. Her research focusses on two related areas: i) understanding and preventing the negative effects of early trauma and violence on children’s development, particularly the impacts on young people’s later involvement in the criminal justice system; and ii) improving mental health and treatment services for young people involved in, or at risk of involvement in, the child protection and justice systems.
Since graduating in 2017, she has held dual clinical-research roles, authoring >30 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, 2 treatment manuals, and obtaining >3.7 million in funding as a chief investigator. Recognising the innovation and impact of her work, Nina was awarded the 2021 Swinburne Vice-Chancellor’s Research Excellence (Early Career) Award, the 2022 School of Health Sciences Award for Emerging Outstanding Researcher, and a 2022 International Trainee Award for Early Career Scholars in Child Abuse & Neglect. She was also a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, allowing her to collaborate with world-renowned childhood trauma experts in the US.
