Mental health support for Australians targeted by Facebook

The Australian Psychological Society is deeply concerned that Facebook has taken down the APS Facebook page in the middle of a mental health crisis.

The APS Facebook page is used to share critical mental health information with Australians, including COVID-19 resources, bushfire and natural disasters resources, and helpful information about how to connect with a psychologist and access mental health services.

Dr Zena Burgess, CEO of the APS said “Facebook’s decision couldn’t come at a worse time.”

“Psychologists have been on the front-line of mental health care throughout the pandemic, and Facebook has been a vital tool for us to share mental health advice with Australians during an incredibly difficult period.”

“Victoria has just emerged from a statewide lockdown, and similar lockdowns have been experienced in Perth and Brisbane over the recent months. The pandemic isn’t over and Australians need access to reputable information to support their mental health.”

“Facebook needs to immediately reinstate the APS Facebook, as well as a range of other health care and community organisations’ pages which have been caught in the crossfire.”
