Using client assessment to improve psychological pain management

Overview

The APS hosts this activity with the APS College of Health Psychologists.

Chronic and persistent pain is common and service improvement is needed to better integrate psychological therapies. This webinar is designed to assist psychologists to understand how specialist pain management services are using client assessment to improve service outcomes.

The acitivity will:

  • offer opportunities to discuss how psychological services can be better integrated to improve specialist pain management outcomes,

  • introduce the electronic Persistent Pain Outcomes Collaboration (ePPOC). which involves the collection of a standard set of information by specialist pain services. This information is used to guide treatment for individual patients, measure outcomes following treatment and provide a benchmarking system for the pain sector,

  • outline how psychological pain management services have been integrated in specialist pain management services and opportunities to improve integration, and

  • initiate discussion of options for further involving psychological services in the ePPOC system.

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic.

Duration of access

Access to this activity is for 12 months from the date of confirmed registration.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • recognise how psychological pain management services are currently integrated in specialist pain management services, and

  • discuss how psychological services can be better integrated to improve specialist pain management outcomes.

Dr Mike Shelley MAPS and Janelle White

About the presenter(s)

Dr Mike Shelley has a PhD in health psychology and 22 years of experience in working in chronic pain. Mike is currently contracting in chronic pain and other chronic disease management in the Hunter district NSW. Mike is a National Committee member for the APS College of Health Psychologists, and holds the membership of the ACI (chronic pain) and other clinical advisory groups. Janelle White (CNC, MACN), A/Director of the electronic Persistent Pain Outcomes Collaboration (ePPOC). Janelle is a Clinical Nurse Consultant (Pain)/Paramedic Specialist with extensive experience in clinical healthcare, research and development in primary care, particularly in chronic and complex disease, integrated care and pain management. As the Acting Director of ePPOC, she contributes to the improvement of treatment and outcomes for people living with persistent (chronic) pain through quality initiatives and research.
