Assessment for

Statement of skilled employment

To be eligible for this assessment you must have already attained a successful skill assessment.

A Statement of Skilled Employment details whether an applicant’s claims of relevant work experience equate to work at the appropriately skilled level of a psychologist in Australia. The APS may only assess relevant employment as a psychologist or in a psychological role.

Skilled workers applying for the Skilled Independent (such as subclass 189) visa may wish to include claims of relevant work experience as part of an Expression of Interest (EOI) lodged online through SkillSelect.

To determine whether you have a basis for applying for an assessment for Statement of Skilled Employment, you will need to meet all of the following criteria.

  1. Must be below the age limit for the visa sub-class you are applying for
  2. Attained a positive skills assessment from the APS for skilled migration
  3. In the last 10 years you must have:
    • Worked as a general registered psychologist in Australia for at least 1 year OR
    • Worked as a registered psychologist for at least 3 years in countries where there is state/national registration for psychologists such as Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, USA OR
    • Worked in a psychological role for at least 3 years since attaining your highest qualification in a country where there is no state/ national registration OR
    • Attained research only postgraduate degree in psychology (eg PhD) and have worked in an academic role at a recognised tertiary/research institute for at least one year in Australia or 3 years overseas.
  4. Can provide evidence of at least 20 hours per week of relevant employment held in the last 10 years. You must include each position you have held in that time identifying if you were a psychologist or in a psychological role.

Acceptable documentation includes position descriptions, employment contracts, tax returns and payment summaries.

Please note: Points for relevant skilled employment history are awarded by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). The APS only provides advice on whether an applicant’s claims of work experience equate to work at the appropriate skill level of a psychologist.
