APS Significant Contribution to Psychology in the Public Sector Award

The purpose of this award is to promote the invaluable work that Psychologists perform in the Public Sector across a diverse range of settings, functions and roles. It aims to recognises and celebrate exemplary leadership by a psychologist that has had a significant and positive impact on advancing the theory and practice of psychology in the public sector 

Eligibility criteria

  1. Candidates must demonstrate that they have been working in the Public Sector for at least five years.
  2. Nominee's contributions/work must have had significant impact in Australia.
  3. Candidates must hold the grade of Member, Fellow or Honorary Fellow of the APS.

Judging criteria

  1. In judging candidates for the award, the Awards Committee will consider the substantial contribution to psychological practice made by candidates working in the Commonwealth, State or Territory, or Local Government public services, or other eligible NGOs. Public Sector Psychologists eligible for this award may be employed in, but are not necessarily restricted to, the following settings:
    1. Inpatient, outpatient and other health services
    2. Disability, community and human services
    3. Education
    4. Justice and corrective services
    5. Defence and emergency services
    6. Sport and recreation
  2. Eligible Psychologists might undertake a variety of work roles, including but not restricted to:
    1. Hands-on clinical or health-related service delivery
    2. Program evaluation
    3. Policy development
    4. Research and development
    5. General Management
  3. Criteria for what constitutes a ‘significant contribution’ might include:
    1. Development of innovative programs and/or products in the public sector 
    2. Innovative approaches to evidence-based practice
    3. Outstanding service in a position of leadership in the Public Sector
    4. Advocacy work
    5. Contributing to the creation of public sector relevant CPD for Psychologists

Value of the Award

The successful nominee will receive:

  1. $1500 Cheque 
  2. Travel Package to a APS Conference (Inclusive of Conference Registration, Accommodation and flights)

The winner will be announced at the APS Awards Event each year, a video interview will be posted on the APS Website and shared across other media channels.

Nomination process

  1. A call for nominations will be advertised across relevant APS publications and media
  2. Nominations should be submitted using the online nomination form. Please note self-nominations cannot be accepted.
  3. The APS Awards Committee will be responsible for determining an appropriate candidate for receipt of the award.
